Modern Contemporary
Transforming an underutilized property into a modern outdoor sanctuary.
The homeowners came to us with a common challenge: a dated property with an overgrown backyard and a front yard that lacked curb appeal. Their vision was clear—create a cohesive, modern outdoor living environment that would extend their home and provide space for relaxation and entertaining.
The scope encompassed a complete front and backyard renovation. In the front, we replaced the aging picket fence with clean stucco planters, installed a new paver driveway, and added composite deck steps leading to the entry. The backyard required a full reimagining—removing overgrown landscaping and replacing it with a structured layout featuring a custom pergola, composite decking, paver patio, and a manicured lawn area.
Throughout the design, we prioritized clean lines, quality materials, and professional landscape lighting to create spaces that would be equally inviting during the day and evening hours.
Before the Transformation
The original property presented several challenges typical of older Bay Area homes. The backyard was dominated by overgrown grass and lacked any defined outdoor living areas. A simple stone retaining wall divided the space but offered no functional benefit. The front yard featured a dated white picket fence and minimal landscaping that did little to enhance the home's street presence.

Building the Vision
The transformation began with comprehensive site preparation. We cleared the overgrown vegetation, regraded the yard for proper drainage, and established the foundational layout that would define the new outdoor spaces. Structural planning was critical—the pergola placement, deck dimensions, and paver patterns were all mapped before any materials arrived on site.

The front yard took shape first, with the installation of modern stucco-finished planters replacing the dated picket fence. A new paver driveway in a herringbone pattern was laid, complemented by composite deck steps leading to the front entry. Low-voltage landscape lighting was integrated from the start, ensuring every element would be showcased after sunset.
In the backyard, the framework for the transformation emerged. The custom pergola structure was erected, composite decking was installed around it, and the paver patio began taking shape. Each phase was executed with precision, setting the stage for the final result.
A New Outdoor Living Room
Where overgrown grass and an unused yard once stood, a fully realized outdoor living space now takes shape. The custom pergola anchors the design, providing shade and architectural definition. Composite decking flows seamlessly around the structure, leading to a central fire feature that serves as the gathering point. The result is a space built for daily use and evening entertaining.

Design Elements
- Custom Pergola Structure
Architectural aluminum frame with integrated lighting channels for a clean, modern profile.
- Composite Decking
Low-maintenance composite boards in a warm wood tone, elevated for seamless flow between zones.
- Fire Feature
Linear gas fire pit as the central gathering point, positioned for optimal seating arrangement.
- Layered Landscape Lighting
Low-voltage LED system with path lights, step risers, and pergola accent lighting.
- Defined Zones
Distinct areas for covered lounging, open-air fire gathering, and a manicured lawn.
Built to Last
Every material was selected for durability and visual cohesion. The powder-coated aluminum pergola resists weathering while maintaining its clean lines. Composite decking eliminates the maintenance demands of natural wood without sacrificing warmth or texture.
The paver patio uses interlocking concrete pavers in a pattern that complements both the deck and lawn edges. Dark gray tones unify the hardscape while allowing the warm wood-tone deck to stand out as the primary feature.
Attention to detail is visible in every joint, edge, and transition. The step risers align precisely with the pergola posts. Lighting fixtures are recessed where possible. Drainage was engineered into the design from day one, ensuring the space performs as well as it looks.
Curb Appeal, Redefined
The front yard transformation mirrors the backyard in both material palette and design intent. Clean stucco planters frame the entry, defining the property line while creating depth and structure. A custom horizontal slat gate welcomes visitors while maintaining privacy. The paver driveway replaces dated concrete, and low-voltage landscape lighting ensures the home looks as stunning after dark as it does during the day.

One Cohesive Vision
From street to backyard, the entire property now operates as a unified design. The same material palette flows throughout: warm composite wood tones, clean white stucco, dark metal accents, and contemporary pavers. Landscape lighting ties it all together after dark, creating a home that looks as considered from the curb as it does from the patio.

A Property Transformed
What began as an outdated property with an underutilized backyard and dated curb appeal is now a fully realized outdoor living environment. Every element—from the pergola structure to the paver driveway to the landscape lighting—was designed, built, and finished to the same standard. This is the kind of work that adds lasting value: functional spaces built for daily enjoyment, crafted with materials that will look as good in ten years as they do today.
